About the International Baccalaureate (IB)

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an internationally recognised and respected qualification that is designed to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and compassionate young people.

Unlike A-levels, which focus on a smaller range of academic subjects, the IB encourages students to explore 6 academic areas alongside the IB Core (theory of knowledge, the extended essay and creativity, activity, service), building depth and breadth of knowledge.

Ultimately, it offers a broad, balanced curriculum that values independent thought and global understanding, preparing students not just for university, but for life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the International Baccalaureate (IB)compare to A-levels?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) arguably provides a much broader education than A-levels.

Most students take three A-levels, which is a common standard for university applications, whereas the International Baccalaureate (IB) combines 6 subjects with three required components (IB/DP core) that covers real-life skills such as critical thinking, research and community service.

The IB is therefore ideal for students who want an internationally recognised qualification that develops both academic and personal skills.

What subjects are on offer for the IB programme?

Students study six subjects across the IB curriculum: Science, Mathematics, Individuals and Societies (Humanities), two languages, and either Visual Arts or an additional Science, Language, or Humanities subject. Three subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL).

Subjects offered include:

Group 1 – Studies in Language and Literature: English Language and Literature

Group 2 – Language Acquisition: French Acquisition or French Language and Literature (for the Bilingual Diploma), and French Ab Initio (online class)

Group 3 – Individuals and Societies: Economics, Geography, History, Environmental Systems and Societies

Group 4 – Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Group 5 – Mathematics: Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (SL only), Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (SL & HL)

Group 6  – The Arts: Visual Arts, or a subject from Group 2, 3, or 4 (e.g., Spanish, History, Geography, Chemistry)

The IB Core further enriches student learning:

  • Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research project allowing students to explore a topic of their choice and develop critical research and writing skills.
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A course that encourages reflection on knowledge itself, exploring how we know what we claim to know through global perspectives and interdisciplinary discussion.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Students engage in volunteer work, creative projects and physical activities, documenting their experiences to foster personal growth, leadership, and social responsibility.

Together, the six subjects and the IB Core help students develop deep academic understanding, critical thinking, international-mindedness, and the ability to apply their learning in real-world contexts. Our offerings are reviewed annually, and we maintain flexibility to respond to evolving needs.
