Julien Astruc Head of Secondary School

Julien Astruc

Born in Abidjan, in the Ivory Coast, Julien spent his childhood in France. Passionate about cinema and painting, he decided to follow the scientific track to prepare for the Louis Lumière School exam. At the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Julien discovered a profound affinity for physics, especially nuclear and particle physics. After his Master’s, he worked on his PhD at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Orsay, and at CERN, the European particle accelerator, studying the formation of a new state of matter, quarks and gluons plasma.

Immediately after finishing his PhD, an unexpected opportunity led Julien to teach science at the École Française Internationale of Mumbai. He fell in love with teaching and India and lived there for four years.

After Mumbai, Julien moved to the French American International School in San Francisco. During fifteen years at FAIS, Julien occupied numerous positions: Middle and High School science teacher (French and International Tracks); Head of the Science Department; and Global Travel Coordinator.

He eagerly embraces evolving technologies and practices: the flipped classroom, blended learning, and other collaborative techniques providing innovative ways to interact with his students. Julien is immensely excited to continue his journey with the Lycée International de Londres as the Head of Secondary.

Né à Abidjan, en Côte d’Ivoire, Julien passe son enfance en France. Passionné de cinéma et de peinture, il décide cependant de suivre la voie scientifique pour préparer le concours de l’école Louis Lumière. À l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Julien se découvre une profonde affinité pour la physique, en particulier la physique nucléaire et la physique des particules. Après sa maîtrise, il prépare son doctorat à l’Institut de physique nucléaire d’Orsay et au CERN, l’accélérateur de particules européen, où il étudie la formation d’un nouvel état de la matière, le plasma de quarks et de gluons.

Immédiatement après avoir terminé son doctorat, une opportunité inattendue a conduit Julien à enseigner les sciences à l’École française internationale de Mumbai. Il est tombé amoureux de l’enseignement et de l’Inde et a décidé d’y vivre pendant quatre ans.

Après Mumbai, Julien s’installe à la French American International School de San Francisco. Pendant quinze ans à FAIS, Julien a occupé de nombreux postes : Professeur de sciences au collège et au lycée (filières française et internationale), chef du département des sciences et coordinateur des voyages internationaux.

Il adopte avec enthousiasme les technologies et les pratiques en constante évolution : la classe inversée, l’apprentissage mixte et d’autres techniques collaboratives qui offrent des moyens novateurs d’interagir avec ses élèves. Julien est très enthousiaste à l’idée de poursuivre son parcours au Lycée International de Londres en tant que Chef du Secondaire.

Jordi Barea Head of Modern Languages

Jordi Barea

Jordi was born and raised in the North-East of Spain; a town called Cambrils which is located by the Mediterranean coast.

Jordi graduated with a Degree in languages and also achieved his master’s in education. The 2nd year, he attended The University of Birmingham where he met some great people from different ethnicities and cultures. Coming to the UK to study gave him the best life experiences ever, which later developed in wanting to become an international Spanish teacher.

His skills and knowledge have allowed him to teach in the USA for 6 years and, for the last 5 years, Jordi taught in Dubai gaining experience in the IB curriculum. At the same time, he completed his masters in teaching Spanish as a Foreign language.

Jordi enjoys teaching and loves to share his knowledge and past teaching and life experiences with his students. He feels like his knowledge and guidance can help all students to see their true potential and help to embrace change.

Jordi’s main hobbies are hiking, nature and obstacle races and has hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Everest. He loves trying all different kinds of food and traveling to new places.

Jordi est né et a grandi dans une ville du Nord-Est de l’Espagne située sur la côte méditerranéenne, Cambrils.

Jordi possède une licence en langues étrangères et une maîtrise de professorat. Il effectue sa seconde année à l’Université de Birmingham, où il rencontre des personnes de cultures et d’ethnies différentes. Venir étudier au Royaume-Uni est une expérience extraordinaire qui lui donne l’envie de devenir professeur d’espagnol à l’international.

Ses compétences et ses connaissances lui permettent d’enseigner aux Etats-Unis pendant 6 ans. Jordi passe ces 5 dernières années a enseigner à Dubaï où il acquiert l’expérience du programme de l’IB. Parallèlement, il termine sa maîtrise en enseignement de l’espagnol comme langue étrangère. Jordi aime enseigner et partager ses expériences passées avec ses élèves, pour les aider à identifier leur propre potentiel et à accepter le changement.

Ses passe-temps sont : la randonnée (il a gravi le Kilimandjaro et l’Everest), la nature et les courses d’obstacles. Il aime découvrir de nouveaux lieux et toutes sortes de plats.

Darielly Castillo-Whight Spanish Teacher - Head of Year (5e & 6e)

Darielly Castillo-Whight

After graduating in Colombia as a Professional Technician in Analysis and Design of Computational Systems, Darielly joined the Colombian Army as a 2nd Corporal. She worked there as a programmer in the recruitment department. Then she decided to come to the UK to improve her English. She worked in England in different companies as an analyst and programmer including Schlumberger/Sema designing applications for credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard.

Darielly wanted to stay home to raise her family but later, she decided to take on a new challenge since deep down she knew that teaching was her vocation. Darielly is a passionate teacher with experience teaching the English National Curriculum, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge International curriculum.
She has taught at international schools in London and loves to try new technologies for creativity and learning. Outside of work, Darielly loves doing Zumba and spending time with family and friends.

Après avoir obtenu son diplôme en Colombie en tant que technicienne professionnelle en analyse et conception de systèmes informatiques, Darielly a rejoint l’armée colombienne en tant que caporal de deuxième classe. Elle y a travaillé en tant que programmeuse dans le département de recrutement. Ensuite, elle a décidé de venir au Royaume-Uni pour améliorer son anglais. Elle a travaillé en Angleterre dans différentes entreprises en tant qu’analyste et programmeuse, notamment chez Schlumberger/Sema, où elle concevait des applications pour des cartes de crédit telles que Visa et Mastercard.

Darielly souhaitait rester à la maison pour élever sa famille, mais plus tard, elle a décidé de relever un nouveau défi, car au fond d’elle-même, elle savait que l’enseignement était sa vocation. Darielly est une enseignante passionnée avec une expérience de l’enseignement selon le curriculum national anglais, le Baccalauréat International et le curriculum international de Cambridge. Elle a enseigné dans des écoles internationales à Londres et aime essayer de nouvelles technologies pour la créativité et l’apprentissage. En dehors du travail, Darielly aime faire du Zumba et passer du temps avec sa famille et ses amis.

Christophe Freslon-Laubignat Head of Arts

Christophe Freslon-Laubignat

Christophe was born in the Pays de La Loire in the west of France, and showed an interest in art in its many forms at a very young age, especially in painting like his mom. From the age of 14, he wanted to teach and share his passion for visual arts and become a teacher like his father. Autodidact in art, until college, he majored in that field and in history of art and cinema as well. He obtained the CAPES, a teacher certification at the age of 23 and became an art teacher for 4 years around his birthplace. In 2000, he had his first solo painting exhibition and then went to teach in Los Angeles, where he stayed more than 20 years. There he taught in French and in English visual art and history of cinema, while creating several series of paintings and shows. Now in London, teaching art in both tracks, is a new and exciting chapter for Christophe at Le Lycée International de Londres Winston Churchill.

Christophe Freslon-Laubignat est né dans les Pays de la Loire, dans l’ouest de la France, et a montré très tôt un intérêt pour l’art sous ses différentes formes, notamment la peinture, comme sa mère. Dès l’âge de 14 ans, il souhaitait enseigner et partager sa passion pour les arts visuels, tout comme son père. Autodidacte en art jusqu’au collège, il s’est spécialisé dans ce domaine ainsi que dans l’histoire de l’art et le cinéma. À l’âge de 23 ans, il a obtenu le CAPES, une certification d’enseignant, et est devenu professeur d’arts plastiques pendant 4 ans près de son lieu de naissance. En 2000, il a eu sa première exposition de peinture en solo, puis est parti enseigner à Los Angeles, où il est resté plus de 20 ans. Là-bas, il a enseigné les arts plastiques et l’histoire du cinéma en français et en anglais, tout en créant plusieurs séries de peintures et spectacles. Maintenant à Londres, enseigner l’art dans les deux sections est un nouveau chapitre passionnant pour Christophe au Lycée International de Londres Winston Churchill.

Jarrod Grabham Humanities Teacher - Head of Year

Jarrod Grabham

Having grown up in outback Australia, Jarrod always aspired to explore and live abroad to experience the diversity this planet offers. After working as a disability support worker for several years, in 2013 Jarrod travelled the world for 9 months visiting Timor-Leste – where he volunteered teaching English for 3 months – India, Russia, Mongolia, Israel and the West Bank, amongst other places. The challenges many developing countries face due to the horrors of war prompted him to return and study a Bachelor of International Security Studies / Bachelor of Arts (History) at the Australian National University in Canberra. Following this he completed a double Masters in International Law / International Relations, a Graduate Certificate in Voice (music) (University of Queensland) and a Master of Teaching (Deakin University). Highlights at university included semesters abroad in Washington D.C. and Dublin – where he was a Trinity College chapel choral scholar. In June 2020 he commenced a teaching position at Mount Gravatt State High School, one of Brisbane’s premier state schools, where he taught Ancient History, Modern History and English. Jarrod is incredibly thrilled to be joining the Lycée International team as a Humanities teacher in September 2022, as he is passionate about inquiry-based learning and its ability to consistently engage students.

In his spare time, Jarrod enjoys singing tenor in the Crouch End Festival Chorus – recently performing Verdi’s Requiem at the opening night of the BBC Proms 2022. Other hobbies include travelling to off the beaten track locations, experiencing new cuisines, wine appreciation and discovering noteworthy retro and foreign films.

Ayant grandi dans l’arrière-pays australien, Jarrod a toujours aspiré à explorer et vivre à l’étranger pour découvrir la diversité que cette planète offre. Après avoir travaillé pendant plusieurs années en tant qu’assistant de soutien aux personnes handicapées, Jarrod a voyagé dans le monde entier pendant 9 mois en visitant Timor-Leste, où il a volontairement enseigné l’anglais pendant 3 mois, ainsi que l’Inde, la Russie, la Mongolie, Israël et la Cisjordanie, entre autres endroits. Les défis auxquels de nombreux pays en développement sont confrontés en raison des horreurs de la guerre l’ont incité à revenir et à étudier un baccalauréat en études de sécurité internationale / baccalauréat en histoire à l’Australian National University à Canberra. Par la suite, il a obtenu un double master en droit international / relations internationales, un certificat d’études supérieures en chant (musique) (Université du Queensland) et une maîtrise en enseignement (Deakin University). En juin 2020, il a commencé à enseigner à la Mount Gravatt State High School, l’une des principales écoles publiques de Brisbane, où il a enseigné l’histoire ancienne, l’histoire moderne et l’anglais. Jarrod est extrêmement ravi de rejoindre l’équipe du Lycée International en tant qu’enseignant en sciences humaines en septembre 2022, car il est passionné par l’apprentissage basé sur l’investigation et sa capacité à engager constamment les élèves.

Valérie Picard School Nurse - Head of Year

Valérie Picard

Valérie graduated as a nurse in 1999. Her first job was at the « Centre hospitalier Universitaire de la Réunion » in the emergency unit, the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units and the serious burn unit.

Always looking for new challenges, she joined the team of one of the biggest pharmaceutical company, Glaxosmithkline, developing her knowledge on asthma, immunisation and diabetology. In 2008, she decided to dedicate her professional life to children and teenagers as a school nurse, in both primary and secondary schools. She holds a diploma as a first aid teacher (formatrice en PSC1 et SST).

Valerie moved to London in 2017 with her 3 children and, after an experience as a volunteer French teacher assistant in an English secondary school, she was delighted to join the LIL and to be working with children and families of our international community.

She has been working at LIL for several years now within the wellbeing team. Passionate about health education, she is often in classes to offer workshops about health and well being.

Valérie est infirmière diplômée d’État depuis 1999. Elle a commencé sa carrière au Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de la Réunion, dans les services d’urgence, grands brûlés, pédiatrie et soins intensifs néonatals.

A la recherche de nouveaux défis, elle a intégré l’équipe de l’un des plus grands laboratoires pharmaceutiques mondial, Glaxosmithkline, développant ainsi ses connaissances en matière d’asthme, de diabète et de vaccinologie. En 2008, elle décide de consacrer sa vie professionnelle aux enfants et aux adolescents et réussit le concours d’infirmière scolaire. Elle travaille depuis avec des élèves de primaires et de secondaires. Elle détient également deux diplômes de formatrice en premiers secours (formatrice en PSC1 et SST).

Valerie s’est installée à Londres en 2017 avec ses 3 enfants et, après une expérience de volontariat en tant qu’assistante de professeur de français dans une école anglaise, elle fut ravie de rejoindre l’équipe du LIL et de travailler avec les enfants et les familles de notre communauté internationale.

Cela fait maintenant plusiers ans qu’elle travaille au sein de l’équipe de wellbeing du LIL. Passionnée d’éducation à la santé, elle offre régulièrement aux élèves des ateliers de travail autour de la santé et du bien-être.

David Vijay Ramchurn Head of Science

David Vijay Ramchurn

David has previously been teaching in South East London, where he had been teaching science with A-Level Physics and Psychology over the last 6 years. His career within education has seen him working in schools all over London, from South East to North London.

David Qualified as a teacher in 2012 From Goldsmiths University of London and graduated with honours in Environmental Science from Lancaster University. His passion for teaching comes from his desire to help people and his interest in science comes from his love of the natural world. He has been helping students ever since his university days where he tutored and assisted laboratory students and also has worked as a teaching assistant in a Special Educational Needs school.

In his spare time David enjoys travelling, Art and furthering his own education, especially languages. He has previously studied Japanese and is currently attempting to learn Korean, whilst looking forward to studying French again at LIL.

David obtient sa licence en Sciences de l’Environnement avec mention à l’Université de Lancaster puis reçoit sa certification d’enseignant en 2012 à l’Université Goldsmiths de Londres. Sa passion pour l’enseignement naît de son altruisme, et son intérêt pour la science vient de son amour de la nature.

David vient volontiers en aide aux élèves depuis toujours, que ce soit dans le cadre de l’université où il fait du tutorat ou d’une école spécialisée pour enfants en difficulté scolaire où il est assistant de classe.

David enseigne les sciences dans tout Londres et plus particulièrement dans le sud-est de la ville depuis 6 ans. Il est en charge du niveau Terminale (options Physique et Psychologie).

En dehors des classes, David aime voyager et approfondir ses connaissances, en particulier les langues. Il a étudié le japonais par le passé, apprend actuellement le coréen, et a hâte de se mettre bientôt au français à LIL.

John Richardson Head of Year

John Richardson

John hails from the picturesque banks of the River Tyne in Newcastle, a little way from where Vikings first invaded a monastery on Holy Island. While his red hair and a recent DNA test suggest a hint of Scandinavian ancestry, it’s his love for folk tales and words that truly defines him.

John earned his Cambridge CELTA in 2011 and ventured to Brazil, where he collaborated with the English department at the University of Brasilia (UnB), crafting a tailored course for government officials working at the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. Returning to London, John further honed his teaching expertise, specialising in Cambridge and IELTS exam preparation, and Business English sessions, while championing the integration of digital tools in the classroom. Since joining LIL in 2017, he’s been instrumental in delivering a diverse range of Language and Literature programmes, including Cambridge IGCSE and LLCE within the French Baccalaureate.

Beyond the classroom, John is recognised for his creativity, with an affinity for music and poetry. Integrating song and spoken word into his lessons, he fosters a rich exploration of language and culture, encouraging students to embrace diverse perspectives in their educational journey. John continues to express his creativity through his songwriting and is also a keen photographer. With an eye for storytelling, he seeks to uncover narratives in everyday encounters, underscoring his belief in the power of a story to illuminate the learning experience.

John est originaire des rives pittoresques de la rivière Tyne à Newcastle, dans le nord-est de l’Angleterre, un peu à l’écart de l’endroit où les Vikings ont envahi pour la première fois un monastère sur l’île Sainte. Bien que ses cheveux roux et un récent test ADN suggèrent un soupçon d’ascendance scandinave, c’est son amour pour les contes et les mots qui le définit vraiment.

John a obtenu son CELTA de Cambridge en 2011 et s’est aventuré au Brésil, où il a collaboré avec le département d’anglais de l’Université de Brasilia (UnB), élaborant un cours sur mesure pour les fonctionnaires travaillant à la Chambre des députés brésilienne. De retour à Londres, John a perfectionné son expertise en matière d’enseignement, se spécialisant dans la préparation aux examens de Cambridge et de l’IELTS, ainsi que dans les sessions d’anglais des affaires, tout en défendant l’intégration des outils numériques dans la classe. Depuis qu’il a rejoint LIL en 2017, il a joué un rôle déterminant dans la mise en œuvre d’une gamme variée de programmes de langues et de littérature, y compris le Cambridge IGCSE et le LLCE dans le cadre du baccalauréat français.

Au-delà de la salle de classe, John est reconnu pour sa créativité, avec une affinité particulière pour la musique et la poésie. En intégrant la musique et la littérature dans ses cours, il favorise une riche exploration de la langue et de la culture, encourageant les élèves à adopter des perspectives diverses dans leur parcours éducatif. John continue d’exprimer sa créativité à travers l’écriture de chansons et est également un photographe passionné. Ayant le sens de la narration, il cherche à découvrir des récits dans les rencontres quotidiennes, soulignant sa croyance dans le pouvoir d’une histoire pour illuminer l’expérience d’apprentissage.

Marc Sahores Head of Mathematics

Marc Sahores

Marc Sahores was born in Basque Country (the south west of France) and studied in Pau and Bordeaux universities where he graduated with a Masters in Physics. His preference for maths and abstraction brought him to pass the PLP maths/sciences teacher certification. However, as a maths teacher, he never hesitates to flavour his class with concrete examples coming from physics or chemistry.

His curiosity has brought him to teach in classes of different levels and age groups like middle schools, vocational, technological and general high schools, professional training and post baccalaureate programmes with students from 10 years of age to 40. Marc has also taught internationally in Paris, Martinique, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Very fond of his multi-cultural and bilingual experiences abroad, Marc is very excited to join us at the Lycée International Winston Churchill.

In his free time, Marc enjoys running and swimming and whatever he is doing, his radio plays classical music.

Marc Sahores est né au Pays basque (sud-ouest de la France) et a étudié à l’université de Pau et de Bordeaux, où il a obtenu un master en physique. Sa préférence pour les mathématiques et l’abstraction l’a amené à passer le concours de professeur de lycée professionnel (PLP) en mathématiques et sciences. Cependant, en tant que professeur de mathématiques, il n’hésite jamais à agrémenter ses cours avec des exemples concrets issus de la physique ou de la chimie.

Sa curiosité l’a amené à enseigner dans des classes de différents niveaux et groupes d’âge, tels que les collèges, les lycées professionnels, technologiques et généraux, la formation professionnelle et les programmes post-baccalauréat, avec des élèves âgés de 10 ans à 40 ans. Marc a également enseigné à l’étranger, à Paris, en Martinique, à Seattle et à Los Angeles.

Très attaché à ses expériences multiculturelles et bilingues à l’étranger, Marc est très heureux de nous rejoindre au Lycée International Winston Churchill.

Dans ses temps libres, Marc aime courir et nager, et peu importe ce qu’il fait, il écoute de la musique classique à la radio.
